Spring Co-Op 2027 -- Mechanical Engineering

Spring 2027 Co-Op, Mechanical Engineering

Greentown Labs, Somerville, MA

Engineering, Full-Time, Hybrid

At the intersection of technology and creativity, 3D printing turns ideas into tangible realities. Metal is one of the most versatile materials — but today’s metal printing technologies are costly, hazardous, and limited to large-scale industrial use.

Studio 3e8 is a team that is changing that. We deliver a fully integrated hardware, software, and materials ecosystem that enables part production at the speed of information. Our mission is to make professional-grade fabrication affordable, compact, and easy to use—putting tomorrow’s manufacturing capabilities into the hands of today’s designers.

We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op (Spring 2027) to join our team in Somerville who can help us realize our vision and implementation of cutting-edge additive metal printing manufacturing. We’ve built a solution that works; we seek someone to help us optimize and scale from now to large-scale adoption.

We’re backed by some of the top VCs in the business, are proud members of Greentown Labs, and are ecstatic to be growing a team passionate about enabling an entirely new means of fabrication.

ABOUT YOU –

  • Are studying Mechanical Engineering, or have a strong interest in hardware development with demonstrated experience building complex electromechanical systems.

  • Have familiarity with 3D printing technologies.

  • Have familiarity with parametric/engineering 3D modeling software (we use OnShape).

  • Are comfortable with and excited about hands-on assembly, from quickly prototyping test stands to carefully assembling future customer-facing units.

  • Can follow safety protocols and safely use industrial equipment in a lab environment.

  • Are comfortable designing, executing, and analyzing results of scientific experiments.

  • Ability to effectively communicate about your projects to team members, both written and verbally.

  • Enjoy working in small dynamic teams, empowering progress through the teaching and learning of subject matter expertise.

  • Enjoys learning new things and exploring the unknown – self-motivated to explore a broad range of topics but also dive deep on relevant subtopics.

  • Love pushing the boundaries of what’s scientifically possible!

BONUS SKILLS –

  • Expertise with parametric 3D modeling.

  • Comfort running scripts via command line.

  • Experience with data collection and analysis in precise laboratory environments.

  • Experience with soldering, crimping wires, etc. for electrical assemblies.

  • Background doing firmware or software development.

  • Comfortable troubleshooting / debugging mechanical systems.

  • Projects that showcase elements with moving components.

  • Interested in entrepreneurship and the startup experience.

YOUR CO-OP PROJECT(S) –

Studio 3e8’s metal printing is a harmony between hardware, software, and materials. You’ll be pushing our mechanical systems to their limits, proving what’s possible with our new & novel print process, and being hands-on with industry changing hardware.

Exact projects / scope are subject to change – startups pivot quickly, after all! – but these should give you an idea of some of the types of work you’re likely to be doing.

  • Design test fixtures to test the lifetime of critical components of the machine.

    • Develop the experimentation plan with the team, then execute on those experiments, and report back your findings.

  • Run daily prints on the prototypes, evaluating prints and printers for quality and reliability.

    • Try to break our print process with notably complex geometries, and suggest improvements that make those geometries possible.

  • Work with the Mechanical Engineering team to implement new hardware features – from creation in CAD to implementation in units that will go to the field.

    • Own the design and implementation of small mechanisms critical to the function of the machine.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company.  We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.  We’re founded by a woman & LGBTQ+ team– and we know that the best products, and teams, are built through sharing a variety of experiences and perspectives.

We are not filling a box here; we are building a team. This is a key hire, so even if you don't check every box yet see yourself contributing, please apply. Just explain why and how your unique background and experiences will help us.
